Der See riesige See (22x30 km) liegt auf 2357 m Seehöhe und ist eiskalt. Im Winter friert er vollständig zu (ausser dort wo heisse Quellen münden) und dieses Eis taut oft erst im Mai ab. Die maximale Tiefe von nur 118 m ist also nicht schuld an der eisigen Wassertemperatur, es liegt eindeutig an der Seehöhe.
