Der Platz wurde von Elisa Baciocchi, einer von Napoleons Schwestern, erbaut. Sie war Prinzessin von Lucca von 1805 bis 1814. Sie befahl den Abriss der Kirche San. Pietro Maggiore, um einen großen Platz in französischem Stil vor Ihrer Residenz zu schaffen, heute bekannt als Palazzo Ducale. Auch die Platanen erinnern stark an Plätze in Frankreich.
