Beschreibung:

Длина тела 30-35 см, весят 450—500 г. Высокий ярко окрашенный клюв сильно сжат с боков. Спина чёрная, низ тела белый. Лапы оранжево-красные. Тупики хорошо ходят, летают, плавают и ныряют. Побережья северной части Атлантического океана и прилежащие части Северного Ледовитого океана.

Гнездятся группами или колониями по обрывистым морским берегам. Питаются мелкой рыбой и морскими беспозвоночными.

Большую часть времени они проводят в море, покачиваясь на волнах, иногда в сотнях километров от суши. Это период, когда тупики могут вести одиночный образ жизни, хотя некоторые держатся парами. Весной сотни тупиков собираются на берегу, чтобы вывести птенцов. Чаще всего эти птицы роют норы своим клювом в крутых склонах холмов, а иногда среди камней у подножия скал.
