L’Atomium est un monument de Bruxelles, Belgique, représentant la maille élémentaire du cristal de fer (phase cubique centré) agrandie 165 milliards de fois. Les neuf sphères représentent les neuf atomes constitutifs du cristal de fer. L’Atomium a été conçu par l’ingénieur André Waterkeyn et érigé par les architectes André et Jean Polack pour l’Exposition universelle de Bruxelles de 1958 (Expo ’58). Rénové de 2004 à 2006, les plaques extérieures en alu ont été remplacé par de l'inox.
