Les neuf sphères représentent les neuf atomes constitutifs du cristal de fer. L’Atomium a été conçu par l’ingénieur André Waterkeyn et érigé par les architectes André et Jean Polack pour l’Exposition universelle de Bruxelles de 1958 (Expo ’58).
