Description of the photograph
Title: Tallinna Mustpeade Maja, House of Blackheads Guild
Taken from:

At Pikk 26, in Tallinn, Estonia.

The House of Blackheads is the meeting house of the Brotherhood of Blackheads, the assembly of unmarried merchants in the Hanseatic cities of the Baltic. The brotherhood was only active in Old Livonia (Estonia and Latvia) and it was unique in Europe. After joining, the guild's career led the most successful merchants often in the City Council. The name is derived from the Holy Mauritius, always depicted as dark-skinned saint of the brotherhood. The by far best known Blackheads House is located on the town hall square in Riga.

The one in Tallinn has a beautifully carved portal. The facade of the house is held in the style of the Dutch Renaissance of the 16th Century. At the height of the ground floor are the arms of the Hanseatic Warehouses Bruges, Novgorod , London and Bergen. The Brotherhood existed from 1400 until 1940 in Talllinn and since then still active in Germany. The Russian Tsars Peter the Great, Paul and Alexander I were honorary members of the fraternity and have visited this house.
