Die Hofkirche und das angrenzende Franziskanerkloster wurden 1553 bis 1563 unter Maximilians Enkel, Kaiser Ferdinand I. (1503–1564), errichtet und dem Heiligen Kreuz geweiht. Von Beginn an war sie als Aufstellungsort des Prunkgrabmals für Kaiser Maximilian I. geplant. t.
