This page contains a selection of paper maps and interactive webmaps that I made or was involved with. You need a PDF viewer plugin and a webbrowser with SVG capabilities to view the examples.

Geovite Geodata Server

2007

Geovite Geodataserver

The ETH Geovite Project has the goal to provide easy online access to swiss geodatasets, mainly the ones provided by Swisstopo. The intranet application, jointly developed with Helen Jenny, provides access to a spatial database and allows to extract raster and vector data. Users may browse the various datasets, specify a spatial extent for the download, define the layers and attribute data they are interested in, and place the data sets in the download folder. The download folder triggers data extraction and notifies the user when the data is ready to download. On the server, this application builds upon a IBM DB2 spatial database, with ESRI ArcIMS and Java Servlets. The webclient is written in SVG and ECMAScript.

Screenshot of the Application (PNG). This intranet application won't be released to the public and is not yet available inside ETH. Its an ongoing project.

Geophotos Switzerland

2006

Geofoto.ch, Geophotomap - Georeferenced Photos of Switzerland

This interactive online map was developed by D. Meyer during a semester work, with me as a supervisor and code contributor. Georeferenced photos are displayed on top of the swiss topographic map series provided by Swisstopo. The photo viewpoint is displayed along with a viewing angle indicating the direction and field of view of the photo. Title, metadata and keywords are displayed along with the photo. Photos can be searched and filtered by title, keywords and geographic units.

SVG Version. This application requires a browser with native SVG support, such as Opera 9 and later or Firefox 1.5 and later. Internet Explorer users may view the map with the Adobe SVG plugin.

Interactive Hiking Map Yosemite National Park

2005

Yosemite National Park Hiking Map

The interactive hiking map of the Yosemite National Park is a web based hiking information system. It was developed by J. Neumann-Williams as her diploma work with me as a supervisor and code contributor. It provides interactive topographic maps, hiking information, thematic and touristic information. A hike can be selected according to certain criteria. The chosen trail is displayed in the map along with a profile and a list of useful information and tips. The user can print a part of the map and integrate his personal GPS data. A gallery of georeferenced photos complements the hiking GIS. The webmapping client is written in SVG and runs in most modern web browser and operating systems. Thematic data for the hiking trails and georeferenced photo information is delivered in XML-format. GIS-data was obtained from the USGS and from the National Park Service. The vector data is served by a spatial database and raster data is loaded from OGC WMS services. A level of detail concept, multi-scale datasets and scale-dependent symbology ensure an appealing map design.

Dr. Heinrich Jäckli AG, report information system

2002 - 2003

Report Information System and GIS data browser, Switzerland

This application visualizes locations of reports and expertises on a reference map of Switzerland. On small scales, locations of multiple, adjacent reports are aggregated and represented by red squares, proportional to the number of reports at a given location. After zooming in, the actual and accurate position of a report is mapped with different map symbols and the base map is refined according to the zoom level. All relevant metadata of a report is displayed on demand. Tables summarizing all reports within a given map extent can be generated. Additionally, various GIS data sets produced by the contractor company can be mapped and non graphical GIS attributes can be displayed. Technically, this application builds on PostgreSQL/Postgis (vector data), UMN Mapserver (raster data), PHP, SVG and ECMAScript. Since this is an intranet online mapping application with confidential information, access to this application cannot be provided.

Erdwärmesondenkarte

2002

Erdwärmesondenkarte Kt. Zürich

This map series in scale 1 : 25.000 of the Kanton Zürich displays the locations of geothermal boreholes (for heating), classified by capacity and type. Colored regions indicate where it is forbidden to drill for geothermal energy. Additionally, water protection zones and tunnels are highlighted.

PNG Sample. Due to copyright issues the whole map or map series cannot be shown. Base map provided by Swisstopo.

Dachstein Rieseneishöhle

2000

Dachstein Rieseneishöhle (Ice Cave)

This map was made as part of my diploma work. Survey data was contributed by cavers around Dr. Robert Seemann, as well as many of the drafts for the cave map. The final map was drawn in Corel Draw. The plan view is too big to be shown on the web, but you can see some croppings of the whole map, as well as some profiles.
