Sein Gipfel liegt auf einer Höhe von 2307 m, seine bis zu 1000 m hohen Felswände machen ihn zu einem Anziehungspunkt für Kletterer. Der Name «El Capitan» ist eine Übersetzung des indianischen «To-to-kon oo-lah» ins Spanische. Im Indianischen ist der Berg nach «To-to-kon», einem Häuptling der im Yosemite Valley beheimateten Paiute-Indianer, benannt.
