Krokusse sind ausdauernde krautige, halbwinterharte bis winterharte Geophyten, die Knollen als Überdauerungsorgane ausbilden. Die wenigen (meist etwa fünf) grundständigen Laubblätter sind einfach und parallelnervig; sie weisen fast immer einen weißlichen Mittelnerv auf. Der Blattrand ist glatt.
