Die Gattung ist im gesamten Mittelmeerraum und auf den Kanarischen Inseln verbreitet. Die grösste Artenvielfalt befindet sich im westlichen Mittelmeergebiet (Frankreich, Spanien, Portugal, Marokko, Algerien). Die Zistrosen bilden einen Hauptbestandteil der Garrigue.
